A Nigerian national was arrested here for allegedly being in possession of heroin with police saying that the accused used to supply the drug to discotheques in the city.

Police today said that Joel Michael, currently residing in Punjab's Mohali, was arrested from here yesterday. The Nigerian national, who police alleged was a drug supplier, was nabbed by a team of the Operations Cell in Sector-34 here.

According to police, the accused was coming from Mohali side on a scooter when he was stopped at a check-post where, during a search, police recovered 3.5-gm heroin from his possession.

A case under the provisions of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused, who was said to allegedly supply the drug to the various discotheques in the Union Territory.

Further, police said that since the accused had not registered himself in Chandigarh and Mohali as per the requirements for foreign nationals, he has also been booked under the provisions of the Foreigners Act.

Police said that the accused used to allegedly procure the drugs from Delhi. The Nigerian national was produced before the Duty Magistrate here and has been remanded in police custody till Tuesday.

Further investigation is on into the case, police said, adding that they have sought the accused's custody to trace the persons who are part of the drug racket in the Chandigarh area.
