Nigerian nationals among 3 arrested for fraud

Three persons, including two Nigerian nationals, were arrested from Delhi for allegedly cheating a woman here of Rs 20 lakh after promising her to deliver a courier from Scotland.

A team of Uttarakhand police yesterday arrested Nigerian nationals Anthoni and Godwin along with a woman hailing from Manipur in Deoli extension area in the national capital, Dehradun SSP Sadanand Date said today.

One laptop, four mobile phones, one notepad and 144 sim cards were recovered from their possession.

A woman here lodged a complaint stating that she had got a phone call a few days back that there was courier to be delivered to his address from Scotland and in order to receive the consignment she needs to deposit Rs 65,000 as Customs fees in an account, Date said.
 

The victim then deposited the money in the account provided by the callers. After some days the accused again called her and informed that Rs 15 crore was in the courier and it can't be delivered directly and that she needed to deposit another Rs 20 lakh, police said.

After realizing that she was duped, the woman asked for police help.

Subsequently, Uttarakhand police had formed a ten member team to nab the culprits. The team obtained information after tracing the phone numbers and arrested the trio.

During investigation, it was ascertained that the accused were using various bank accounts from Bengaluru and north east.
