A nine-year-old boy suffering from sickle-cell anaemia and thalassemia was allegedly given blood of a wrong group during transfusion at the Kandhamal district headquarters hospital leading to the deterioration in his health condition.

Pravat Kumar Nayak of Tikabali had undergone blood transfusion at the hospital three days ago during which he was allegedly given B positive group blood instead of O positive, Ashok Parida of local NGO Kandhamal Vikas Parishad said.

His condition deteriorated after the transfusion following which he was admitted to a hospital in Cuttack where the boy is now fighting for his life, Parida added.

Confirming the incident, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Swapneswar Gadanayak said "The matter is under investigation and action will be initiated against the officials responsible for the negligence."

ADMO (Public Health) Narayan Sethi and District Medical Officer Raj Kishore Jena have been appointed as investigating officers, he said adding they are yet to submit the report.

However, when contacted, both the officers said they were yet to receive the CDMO's order.
