Nine youths were taken into custody here today after a 17-year-old student was killed in the Old City area, in an alleged mock street fight with another youth, a police official said.

Nabil Ahmed had collapsed and died in what began as a mock street fight with another youth at Panjesha here on May 3, in an incident involving nearly nine other youths, Mirchowk police station's inspector V Yadagiri Reddy said, adding that all the nine are being questioned in police custody.

"Nabil's body was exhumed and a postmortem was conducted today. The nine youths have been taken into custody and are being questioned. However, nobody has been arrested," the police official said.

A case of suspicious death was registered earlier and the police is awaiting the postmortem report after which sections of the IPC will be altered to include a charge of murder besides other relevant sections, the police official said.

The matter came to light yesterday after a video of the incident showed Nabil being repeatedly punched on his face and chest by another youth.

A group of youngsters allegedly "misled" parents and family members of Nabil that he had died in an accident as well as ensured that it was not reported to the police.

Believing them, Nabil's family buried his body, DCP V Satyanarayana had said yesterday, adding that a probe is on.
