Two tribal women security guards posted at NIT Rourkela have complained of sexual harassment by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the institute, following which he was booked, police said today.

"The complaint was lodged last night against Balaram Champatiray, the CSO of NIT Rourkela. The officer has been accused of sexual harassment and abuse," Inspector in-charge of Sector-3 Police Station, Pratibha Majhi said.

Following the complaint, police teams conducted raids at different places in the steel city, but have not been able to trace the accused, she said.

"While the women security guards have levelled allegation of sexual harassment and abuse, the fact finding team formed by the NIT Director has also lodged an FIR against the accused. All complaints will be clubbed while conducting investigation," DSP P K Mishra said.

Statements of the two women guards were recorded before the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Rourkela court today, the Inspector in-charge said.

The incident came to light last week, following which the students, mostly pursuing PhD and M Tech, who reside in the campus, staged a demonstration demanding action against the officer.

The institute authorities formed a fact finding panel, which submitted its report three days back.

NIT Director Sunil Sarangi said as per the report there were sufficient evidence against Champatiray and an FIR has been lodged against the accused.
