"Apte was a renowned social activist... His death has caused irreparable loss to social and other fields in the country and Maharashtra," Kumar said in his condolence message.
Apte, a former Rajya Sabha member, died at a city hospital in Mumbai yesterday after a brief illness at the age of 73.
