Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today unveiled the statue of a mahadalit woman, alongside that of a Sanskrit scholar at a village in Madhubani district.

Kumar travelled to Sarisab Pahi village in the district to unveil the statues of mahadalit woman Chamain Devi and Sanskrit scholar Pandit Ayachi Mishra.

Addressing a public gathering, the chief minister said the two statues were an example of the pioneering effort by the villagers to give a strong message of equality in society.

Mahadalit has been carved as a separate group within dalits by the Nitish Kumar government. It is considered as the most backward among dalits.

Devi had taken initiative to construct a pond in the village by gifting her golden ornaments, which she had received from Mishra's wife in the 14th century in return for her services, Kumar recalled.
