The National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the International Workers Day as a gazetted holiday across the country as a befitting tribute to the May Day martyrs.
"We urge the prime minister to declare May Day as a gazetted holiday throughout the country under the Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to the May Day martyrs and recognising the valuable contribution of the working class in the all-round development of the country," NMC President Subash Shastri said in a memorandum to the prime minister.
He said because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights across the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy and the frontline welfare state should also declare May 1 as gazetted holiday.
