Continuing its crack-down on illegal activities, the neighbouring Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has filed an FIR against D Y Patil Hospital in Nerul, and shut it down by cancelling the hospital's registration.

Speaking to PTI, NMMC commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, known for his tough stand on illegal constructions and other illegal activities, said, "The hospital was operating though its registration validity period had expired in March and it continued flouting the rules even after warnings and notices to mend its ways".

The FIR was lodged against the hospital management yesterday under the Bombay Nursing Home Act, which requires that every hospital and nursing home must register with local municipal body periodically, Mundhe said.

"This is the first case in Maharashtra where such a punitive action was taken against a hospital run by an influential political leader," said an official of the health department of NMMC who initiated the process of cancellation of registration and lodging of FIR.

D Y Patil group of hospitals and educational institutes are run by NCP leader D Y Patil, former Bihar governor.

Mundhe, considered to be an upright IAS officer, is also considered to have got Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's backing. Last month the NMMC corporators passed no-confidence resolution against him, but the CM suspended it.

"Hospital management was given ample opportunity to come clean and renew the registration, but it failed. As no one is above the law, it took its own course," Mundhe said.
