A state-constituted committee has identified 31 illegal slaughterhouses across Gujarat in the last two years, but no action has been taken against them so far, the government told the Assembly today.
Raising the issue during the Question Hour, Congress' Jawahar Chavda sought the details of the work done by the State Slaughterhouse Committee during the last two years (ending December 31, 2017).
Referring to a directive issued by the Supreme Court, which led to the formation of the committee, Chavda sought to know the number of illegal slaughterhouses identified by the panel in 2016 and 2017.
In his written reply, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani informed the House the committee has identified 31 illegal abattoirs across the state in the last two years.
Responding to a sub-question about the action taken against these slaughterhouses, Rupani said "zero" in his written reply, indicating that no measure was taken against these outlets.
Raising the same issue, Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani asked the government if the committee had failed to serve its purpose.

He also sought to know if the government has taken any step against the committee members for not fulfilling the task of identifying or closing down illegal abattoirs as directed by the Supreme Court.
Responding to Mevani, Rupani, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the government has not received any complaint against the committee or its members.
The chief minister said the committee's work is still under progress and there exists no question of taking action against its members.
