West Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury today said that there was no alternative to the Congress since it was the only political party with a national outlook.

Addressing a party workers' meeting here on the occasion of the 129th foundation anniversary of the Congress, Chowdhury said the party was founded not just to seek votes.

"The Congress delivered independence from British imperialist rule and it inculcated in the people the idea of 'bharatiya'," he said.

"Only numbers do not make a political party," he said and hoped that his party would again regain prominence in Bengal.

' He also criticised the proposed 'Sourya Divas' to be observed by the BJP in memory of Nathuram Godse who had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.

He said that when the international crude prices went down by 34 per cent, the Narendra Modi government reduced them by a meagre five to six per cent in the domestic market.

Making a dig at the Trinamool Congress, Chowdhury said that what the Left had done in its 34-year-rule in West Bengal, the ruling party did it in just three years.

He asked Congress workers not to waste energy in intra-party squabbles and devote themselves to strengthening the party organisation.

In the meeting, 50 TMC workers from Bankura district's Indpur bloc joined the Congress.
