No data on illegal constructions taking place around the country including in Delhi, is maintained centrally, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

"No such data is maintained centrally. 'Public Order' and 'Police' being state subjects as per the provisions of the Constitution of India, the responsibilities of maintaining law and order, registration and prosecution of crimes rest primarily with the respective state governments," Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said.

He stated this in a written reply to a question--'Whether illegal constructions are on the rise in the country including in the NCT of Delhi'.

"The Honourable High Court of Delhi in the matter of 'Kalyan Sanstha Social Welfare Organisation vs UoI & Others' has appointed the Nodal Steering Committee to look into the matter of unauthorised constructions and encroachments," he said.

"Delhi Police has noticed 29164, 22368 and 14982 cases of unauthorised constructions for the years 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively, which were brought to the notice of concerned civic agencies," the minister added.
