The government has decided to do away with the no-detention policy for students from the next academic session, Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey said today.
He said the decision was taken following representation from most of the states as they said the standard of education has deteriorated because of the policy.
Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, no child admitted in a school will be held back in any class or expelled till the completion of elementary education covering classes 1 to 8.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to transform 20 universities of the country into world class ones and the ministry was working in this direction.
To a question, Pandey, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, said construction of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya would be done within the framework of the law.
