No failure in making contributions towards CPS: TN govt

The Tamil Nadu government today submitted in the Madras High Court that there had been no failure in making its contribution towards the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for its employees.

Additional Advocate General Venkatramani and Additional Government Pleader Sanjay Gandhi submitted a Government Order in response to the questions raised by Justice N Kirubakaran in connection with deposits towards CPS of employees.

As per the G.O, the report of Commissioner of Treasuries and Accounts, 7,409 applications requesting CPS final settlement had been received up to August 31 this year, of which final authorisations had been issued in respect of 3,288 retired/resigned/deceased employees.
 

This amounted to Rs 125,24,24,317 and remaining applications would be authorised on receipt of processed requisite documents, the order said.

The G.O was submitted in response to various questions raised by the Judge on Sept 15 when a petition with regard to the ongoing strike by government employees came up for hearing.

After recording the above, Justice Kirubakaran directed the government counsels to file an affidavit in the above regard.

"These are all the facts which have been furnished by the government and it should be made known to everybody including persons who are striking work," he said and posted the matter to tomorrow.

As per the report filed by the government, it had been making equal contribution together with interest regularly to the employees' account.

So far, a sum of Rs 18,016 crore had been accumulated including interest up to March 31 this year and the account slips for the financial year 2016-'17 had already been issued to individuals and the same had been uploaded on the website.

On Sept 15, the judge had sought to know among others whether it was a fact that many retired staff had not been paid the pension amount and whether amount equal to that being deducted from an employee's salary was being deposited by the government.

Petitioners had alleged that even though the amount was being deducted from the salary of the government employees, equal contribution to be made by the government was not being deposited. In many cases the CPS fund amount had not been paid even after retirement, they had contended.
