The sessions court here today rejected the pre-arrest bail application of a lawyer who is accused of posting derogatory comments about a religion on a social networking site.

"The court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of advocate Vijay Gaikwad," said prosecutor Mohan Sawant.

The police last month registered a case against Gaikwad, a Mumbai-based lawyer, for 'promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion' and defamation under the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of Information Technology Act.

Gaikwad's anticipatory bail application contended he had not posted the comments in question.

On December 13, a huge mob had protested outside the RAK police station in central Mumbai, seeking Gaikwad's arrest.
