Jamia Millia Islamia today said there was no proposal to close down its Urdu-medium senior secondary school for girls.

"It has been speculated in certain quarters that the university administration is toying with the idea of shutting down Jamia Girls Senior Secondary School.

"Jamia would like to scotch down such rumours as no such proposal is being considered. The university administration wishes to categorically state that these rumours are baseless and unfounded," the varsity's spokesperson Mukesh Ranjan said in a statement.

Asserting that Jamia has an abiding commitment to women empowerment and gender equity, he said, "It is in the process of strengthening all existing institutions within the varsity system to realise the objectives that went into their making."

When contacted, Ranjan said, "Certain rumours were being circulated on social media that the university is planning to close down the Urdu-medium school. We received certain complaints about the same and hence we decided to clarify it.
