Claiming that yesterday's TESO (Tamil Eelam Supporters' Organisation) conference here was a "success," he said it had answered those who expected it to remain a non-starter in the wake of police denying permission.

Despite court orders to provide secuity to the participants of the conference, including international dignitaries, no policemen were posted at YMCA Grounds, the venue of the evening public meet, he said.

"In a democratic country, parties voted to and out of power, but officials are the ones who are permanent in the (chain of) administration. They should discharge their duties dispassionately and without any political bias towards the ruling party as that is not good for the growth of democracy," he said in a statement.

While the usual 'Z-Plus' category of security cover, under which he is covered was in place, police had not given any other protection which is "not only regrettable, but also condemnable," he said.

Leaders who had participated in the event were "shocked" over this, he said but expressed happiness over the successful conduct of the conference despite "obstacles", apparently referring to police denying permission and a case filed against the meet being held in Chennai.
