Come April one, children in Kamrup Metro district including Guwahati will have to travel to their school only in buses provided by or approved by their schools, and not by any unauthorised hired vehicle.
This decision was taken at a meeting here today between the Kamrup Metro district Deputy Commissioner and the regional transport authority, said a district administration press release.
The children would be allowed to travel only in their own school buses or those buses approved by the school authorities.
Several other decisions were also taken for the safety and security of the children travelling in school buses.
Each bus can have a maximum of 35 seats and the school authorities have to fix Global Positioning System (GPS) in their buses to know their locations and timings, the release said.
While buses plying in unsafe condition would not be permitted to transport children, school buses will have to acquire a no objection certificate from the regional transport authority from now on, the meeting headed by Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamathu decided.
Angamathu also directed the buses to be examined for their safety to transport children.
There are 651 school buses in the capital city and the District Transport Office has completed checking 524 of them for fitness, the release added.
