Six men who had placed a red beacon on their car to wield influence at a wedding were detained by police in Greater Noida on Tuesday, officials said.
Red beacons, once seen as a symbol of VIPs, were banned across India in May 2017.
"The six had parked their car with an illegal red beacon atop it. They were taking selfies when officials from the Badalpur police station detained them," Rajeev Kumar, circle officer, Greater Noida 3rd, said.
Badalpur SHO Vijay Kumar said the six men were identified as Harsh, Shubham, Aazaad, Indraraj, Yatendra and Harendra. All of them are in the age group of 18 to 21 years.
They were arrested from National Highway 91 around 1 pm, he said.
Five of them hail from Delhi, while one is from Loni in Ghaziabad. They had come to attend a wedding in Dadri area of the district, the police said.
"They claimed that they are students. Their claims are being verified. They told police that they had come for a wedding and wanted to wield influence over the guests and other people, hence, they had put the red beacon on their car," the SHO told PTI.
"The car has been impounded for the illegal use of the beacon and the men are being questioned," he said, adding that no criminal case has been registered against them.
