As per FTII, there are concerns about non-completion of courses, no intake for some years due to backlog and "repeated agitations" on any attempt to introduce academic and administrative restructuring for fostering discipline in the campus, the government today said.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Ratore also said that there had been several reported incidents of faculty or employees being threatened, late-night parties, theft of valuable equipment, damage to properties by students.

"There are concerns about non-completion of courses in time, no intake for some years due to backlog and overstay of students in the hostels even after their course completion, repeated agitations on any attempt to introduce administrative and academic restructuring so as to foster academic discipline in the campus," Rathore said.

He added that for a three-year course, the oldest batch of 2008 was still pursuing their course at the institute.

About 40 students of 2008 and 2009 batches were overstaying in hostels and left only after administrative action, he said.

"Several incidents of faculty/employees being threatened, late-night parties, theft of valuable equipment, damage to properties by students have also been reported. The institute is not able to organise convocation after 1997 and these developments have a direct bearing on the performance of the institute," Rathore said in his reply.

The Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is presently witnessing a major students' agitation over the nomination of actor Gajendra Chauhan as the head of the institute by the government.

Replying to another question, Rathore said that as per the rules, President of the FTII is nominated by the Central government. "No specific qualification has been prescribed for the post of President FTII," he said.
