The BJP-led Maharashtra government has terminated the appointments of 21 non-official members of the state Urdu Sahitya Academy.

The Academy was set up in 1975 for conservation of Urdu and to facilitate interaction between Marathi and Urdu writers.

Its current executive president Khurshid Siddique and 20 members were appointed in 2007. Proposal to reconstitute the Academy was under consideration for some time, a government resolution today said.

The new BJP-led government which came to power last year has terminated appointments to various state-controlled organisations in the recent weeks.
