North reels under cold wave, fog; over 150 flights hit

After a hiatus, cold wave gained intensity in most parts of North India while fog affected the schedule of over 150 flights as well as rail traffic.

As many as 152 flights were affected due to fog in the national capital. Eight flights were cancelled while 10 incoming flights were diverted, airport officials said.

Around 134 flights were delayed.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the army has rescued as may as 208 people who were stuck in snow during.

After two sunny days, a foggy and cold morning greeted Delhiites today.

The minimum temperature settled at 10.2 deg C, a notch above normal, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 20.5 deg C, a notch below normal.
 

Meanwhile, cold wave continued in Kashmir Valley as Kargil recorded the lowest night temperature of season with mercury dipping over 21 notches below the freezing point.

Minimum temperature in Srinagar dipped by over one degree from minus 2.3 deg C the previous night, to register a low of minus 3.4 deg C last night.

The mercury in Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir Valley, settled at minus 7.4 deg C, as against minus 7.0 deg C the previous night.

The mercury in the tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded a minimum of minus 10.8 deg C, a slight increase as compared to minus 12.3 deg C the previous night.

Gulmarg registered a low of minus 12 deg C as compared to minus 11.2 deg C the previous night.

Kupwara, in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2 deg C. Leh, in the frontier region of Ladakh, recorded a low of minus 12.7 deg C.

Eight persons trapped in snow in Pir Panchal ranges in Ramban district were rescued by a team of army personnel.

An IAF helicopter unit had yesterday rescued more than 200 people trapped in remote areas of Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir for the last two days.

Out of the eight rescued, four were seriously injured in the freezing cold conditions, a defence spokesperson said.

Dense to moderate fog also occurred at most places in Uttar Pradesh which is in the grip of cold wave.

Nazibabad in Bijnor recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 3.5 deg C.

Cold wave tightened its grip in Punjab and Haryana with minimum temperature dipping below normal at several places.

A thick blanket of fog enveloped most parts of the two states today, affecting normal life.

Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in the region with a minimum of 5.4 deg C. Union Territory Chandigarh recorded minimum of 6 deg C.
