Northeast: Chennai Police sets up 24/7 control room, helplines

Holding that the people and students from the North Eastern region residing in and around Chennai were "very safe and feeling at home," a police statement said, though not a single incident has been reported so far in Chennai, Chennai City Police have opened three help lines to instill confidence and support them."

The numbers that will function round the clock for any assistance are 9840295100, 9677066100 and 9789088100, it said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people from the Northeast were seen thronging Chennai Central Railway Station this evening, waiting to board trains leaving for their home states.

Many had arrived from Coimbatore and nearby areas and were seen with luggage in the passenger waiting area.

 

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had today said the state was peaceful and sought to allay fears of violence against persons of North Eastern states residing here, holding that the government would ensure that people from other states face no difficulty.
