Meghalaya's noted philanthropist Honsen Lyngdoh died today at his home here. He was 83.

Lyngdoh was suffering from age-related ailments, a family member said.

A self-taught man, he had funded several road construction projects in the rural areas, much before the central government's Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana came into existence.

He was honoured with The National Citizens Award in 1992 for his contribution to the development of the northeastern state.

Lyngdoh also owned several vintage cars. His 1904 Model-T Ford was featured in Richard Attenborough's Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi'.
