Rahul Gandhi did not make any wrong statement, Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam today said on the Election Commission's notice against Gandhi for his remarks that Pakistan's ISI was in touch with Muzaffarnagar riot victims and charge that BJP was indulging in politics of hatred.
Nirupam, who is also an AICC Secretary, said the party will respond to the EC notice but targetted BJP asking it to first form a consensus over the issue within its own family before protesting against it.
"What is wrong in it? Serial blasts in Mumbai in the past had happened after communal riots in the city. That is a historical fact. This had happened earlier also. Rahul Gandhi did not refer to any religion. What he said was that ISI was trying to mislead the riot victims of Mujaffarnagr. Where is the reference of any religion in it"? he said.
"We will reply to the notice of the EC as per the legal provisions. But BJP should answer that the statement of Gandhi, which they are opposing, was supported by NDA ally Shiv Sena and RSS. First, BJP should resolve the differences in their own backyard over the issue," Nirupam told reporters.
Asserting that Gandhi did not say anything wrong, Nirupam said the Congress Vice President was only making it clear that "if we fight among ourselves, outsiders will try to fish in the troubled waters".
EC had yesterday issued a notice to Gandhi for his speeches in which he had said Pakistan's ISI was in touch with Muzaffarnagar riot victims and charged BJP with indulging in politics of hatred.
BJP had complained to the Commission seeking action against Gandhi for allegedly violating the code of conduct by appealing for votes on communal lines and inciting hatred among different communities.
