Bored of chatting with your social media friends? Tweet to a plant, instead!

It is often said that talking to plants may help them grow, and now a US museum is putting that popular idea to test with a technological twist.

The museum is investigating the effect of the social media on plant growth.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has created an interactive experiment that lets people tweet to a plant located at the museum through a website dedicated to the project.

The unique message gets converted into robotic speech which then travels through a speaker to the plant, 'Mashable' reported.

Visitors to the site can actually hear the technology at work - as a new tweet pours in, the robot sounds it out.

Another plant currently sits in silence in order to help evaluate the results clearly.

Over the course of the experiment, the museum will look at the overall growth of both plants as well as the colour and size of the plants' leaves.

People have, so far, tweeted words of encouragement as well as harsh messages to the plant.
