A woman has alleged that her husband and in-laws duped her of Rs 20 lakh after promising to help settle in Australia.

A case was booked against Ramandeep Kaur's Australia-based husband Jasbir Singh, and four of her in-laws based on her complaint, police said.

They were booked under various sections of IPC, including for criminal intimidation, for seeking more dowry and duping the woman and her parents of lakhs of rupees, they said.

Kaur, resident of village Narangpur, alleged yesterday that her NRI husband Jasbir Singh(Australia), village Batala-based father-in-law Baldev Singh, mother-in-law Manjit Kaur, brothers-in-law Satwinder Singh (South Africa) and Palwinder Singh (Spain) duped her and her parents of lakhs of rupees under the garb, police said.

Kaur told police that she was a divorcee of her Australia- based former husband Inderjit Verma of Khanna with whom she was married in 2008 and was re-married to NRI Jasbir Singh in 2011 after her formal divorce.

She further alleged that her in-laws, including her husband, took more than Rs 20 lakhs in different instalments under the pretext of settling her in Australia and her husband had also applied for spouse visa, but their demands continued to increase.

When her parents expressed their helplessness to fulfil their more demands, Jasbir, with the connivance of his family members, withdrew the application of spouse visa.

She alleged that Jasbir also got secretly engaged with another girl Gagandeep of Dhilwan during his India's visit last year.

Police are investigating the matter but no arrest has been made so far.
