National Scheduled Castes Alliance (NSCA) today said RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's statement about review of reservation policy was aimed at "polarising the society" and pitched for increasing the quota in proportion to OBC, Dalit population.

"Dalits and OBCs form 80 per cent of the total population in the country. In fact, it is being felt that reservation should be increased in proportion to the population of OBCs and Dalits while the RSS is talking about putting an end to it," NSCA president Paramjit Singh Kainth said.

He said the reservation policy has not yet achieved its goal of empowering the weaker sections and providing social justice and demanded that the reservation should be extended to the private sector too.

Kainth said that recent incidents of targeting the Muslim and Christian communities were creating tensions across the nation.

Stating that Bhagwat's comments amount to a violation of the Constitution, Kainth said, Articles 330, 332 and 335 which talk of reservation should be strengthened.

"Many right wing outfits in Punjab and other states are trying to create anti-reservation mood which poses danger to the delicate fabric of peace in the country," the NSCA chief said.

Even the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party, BJP's ally in Bihar, has clarified that reservation is a settled issue in India as mandated by the Constitution, Kainth stated.

"Bhagwat's remarks have instigated reactions from across the political spectrum. Even RSS' media in-charge Manmohan Vaidya was given the duty to carry out damage control," he said.

The Sangh too had to issue a statement on Bhagwat's damaging remarks saying that he did not make any comments on the reservation being given at present to various weaker sections of society, he added.

The NSCA president said for years the marginalised communities have been deprived of access to education, economic and social equality.

"They have been banned entry to places of worship by the upper castes. And now the RSS is doing little to grant equality to the marginalised," he said.
