The student wing of Congress, National Students Union of India, today said it would be launching various programmes across the colleges in Gujarat in view of the Assembly elections which are due this year.

"It is important to expose the gender, caste, and religion-based discrimination happening on the university campuses. We will launch agitations across the state in coming days and kick-start 'Chhatra Chetana Yatra' to bring students under our fold," NSUI president Amrita Dhavan said here.

NSUI cadre in the state was being mobilised for Assembly elections, and the organisation would focus on the issue of privatisation of school and university education, she said.

Based on feedback from students, the NSUI will also come out with a manifesto ahead of the elections, Dhavan said.

"The wave of change will begin from Gujarat, and will continue till 2019 (Lok Sabha) elections. NSUI is going to play an important role in Assembly elections. We will identify 500-1000 students across each Assembly constituency who would work for the party (Congress)," she said.

"The government considers NSUI as its competition," Dhavan said.

"The state government has used various means to suppress the voice of students. Privatisation of eduction is at its peak. It very well reflects the intention of the present government," she said.
