Seen as a dying industry, medical transcription has registered 50 per cent growth in India in the last two years, a top official of Nuance Transcription Services (NTS) said today.

The US-headquartered Nuance, which entered India some 10 years ago, has then seen tremendous growth, but later expansion declined. But the growth has picked up in the last five years, Shailendra Sharma, Vice President NTS Operations, Nuance Communications told reporters here.

The growth was 50 per cent in India, a major market for medical transcription, in volume in the last two years and was witnessing quarter-on-quarter and year on year growth, he said.

As part of expansion, the company will add 1,000 Medical Language Specialists (MLS) and Quality Controllers over the next 18 months in Coimbatore, Sharma said, adding that these hiring efforts come in conjunction with a huge infrastructure and facility development, more than doubling its current footprint here, with an investment of over USD 1.75 million, he said.

This expansion was part of an all India growth initiative that will lead to hiring of 3,000 MLS and QCs, with an investment of USD 7.5 million in infrastructure in the next 18 months, Sharma said.

Besides Coimbatore, the hiring will take place across Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai, Soumitra Das, Head of Human Resources, NTS, said.
