The CID today arrested a woman for her alleged role in the international child trafficking racket busted at Baduria in North 24 Parganas district, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 14 and the number of women arrested to six.

Earlier in the day, the owner of a nursing home in the northern part of the city was arrested by the CID.

Marefa Bibi, the wife of Anish Mondal of Raghavpur in Machlandapur under Habra police station, was arrested in the evening for her role in the trafficking racket, a senior CID officer said.

She was an "active" trafficker and was working with Utpala Byapari who had links with an NGO, the officer said.

Byapari was arrested earlier in connection with the incident.

The owner of Sri Krishna Nursing Home on College Street, Partha Chatterjee, was arrested earlier in the morning.

"He failed to satisfy us with his answers following which he was arrested," the officer said.

Dr Santosh Kumar Samanta (60), associated with the same nursing home, was arrested yesterday for his alleged involvement in the racket.

Paromita Chatterjee of the same nursing home and Prabha Pramanik and Putul Banerjee of South View Nursing Home in Behala were arrested last evening.

Eight persons were arrested on November 21 following a CID raid at a private nursing home in Baduria after receiving inputs from a source.

They were identified as Najma Bibi, Utpala Byapari, Amirul Biswas (a quack), owner of a local nursing home Asadur Jaman, NGO activist Satyajit Sinha, clinic owner Bakbul Baidya, lawyer Prabhat Sarkar and his associate Jhantu Biswas.

The racket used to smuggle newborns to other states and abroad in cardboard boxes meant for biscuit packaging.
