The objective of mediation is to deliver justice and stay true to the law, and its is not only about taking the burden off the courts, Justice A K Sikri of the Supreme Court has said.

Speaking at the International Alternative Dispute Resolution Summit, Justice Sikri said justice means to give every man the opportunity to put his word forward and then decide what the best decision is.

It is to give every man what's due to him, he said.

"The only reason behind mediation is not to take the burden off the courts but to deliver justice and stay true to the law," Justice Sikri said at the recent held summit.

He said mediation talks about what is right, whereas judicial system talks about who is right.

The summit organised by Maadhyam, the Council for Conflict Resolution, highlighted the theme of 'Building Bridges through Innovative Justice'.

Besides Justice Sikri, the three-day summit was attended by Supreme Court Judge Rohinton Fali Nariman, apex court Judge B S Chauhan, Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and justices Rajiv Shakdher, Manmohan and Jayant Nath, senior advocate A S Chandhiok and others.
