Octogenarian couple killed in Mumbai flat; robbery suspected

An octogenarian couple was allegedly killed by unknown robber(s) at their flat in suburban Khar in Mumbai, police said today.

As per preliminary investigation, Nanak Makhijani (85) and his wife Daya (80) were smothered with a pillow last night, an official said.

Police suspect the role of the Makhijanis' domestic help in the crime who has been missing since last 15 days.

The incident came to light after another domestic help of the couple came for work this afternoon and rang the doorbell of the flat but failed to get any response, the official said, adding that the help then informed the police.

 

Police suspect that the killings might have taken place last night.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem, the official said, adding that the Makhijanis have two sons who live in Singapore.

The official said that some ornaments have gone missing from the flat.

Police have registered an FIR under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 397 (Robbery, or dacoity) and other sections of the IPC, the official said, adding that further investigation is underway.
