The body of an octogenarian lying in a pool of blood was found in the bedroon of his residence at New Alipore in the southern part of the city early today, the police said.

The police suspects that Malay Mookerjee (82) was killed by robbers who entered his room by breaking open the rear door of his house in order to steal valuables.

"It appears that the robbers, for or five of them, tried to cut open the wire mess covering the verandah to enter the house. When they found it too hard to cut through, they broke open the door on the rear end of the house," the officer said.

Initial investigation revealed that the old man tried to resist the thieves. Mookerjee's body was first seen by his maid servant who visited the house early in the morning.

Kolkata Police DC (South) Praveen Tripathi, who went to the place, said, "We are looking into the matter. Our officers are at it."

State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Aroop Biswas, who happened to be the family friend of the Mookerjee's, also visited the house.

Sleuths of the Kolkata Police homicide section are assisting the team from the local police station in the probe into the killing.
