Odisha government today gave its nod to Bijepur lift irrigation project and construction of sewerage system for Bhubaneswar.

The cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and the project is named after renowned poet Gangadhar Meher.

"The lift irrigation project in Baragarh district will irrigate 32,000 hectares 19,000 at Bijepur, 8,000 at Sohela and 5,000 at Barpali. It will improve agricultural output in the area," Agriculture Minister Damodara Rout told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

Padhi said the water will be drawn from Hirakud dam through Baragarh main canal of abour 17.6 km into Barihapalli secondary storage structure. From secondary structure, water will be delivered to the command area through a mix of gravity and pressured under ground pipe system with outlets for every four hectare, he said.

The cabinet also gave its approval to a sewerage project for Bhubaneswars sewerage district-II (mostly comprising Old Town areas), Padhi said.

The Rs 173 crore project work has been awarded to a new company as the one to which it had been handed earlier had failed to execute it properly. Following it the project is likely to be completed in July 2020, he added.
