Setting March, 2016 as the target for operationalisation of the proposed Health University in Odisha, the state government today constituted an expert panel to prepare a blue print for the purpose.

An expert committee with the Director, Medical Education and Training (DMET) as its chairperson, would finalise the modalities for establishment of the Health University, the first of its kind in the state.

"The committee will submit its report on the matter by July 20," an official at the chief secretary's office said.

Besides DMET, secretaries of the health and higher education departments would also be members of the expert panel, the official said.

The decision in this regard was taken at a high level meeting chaired by chief secretary G C Pati. The meeting discussed among other things the structure, profile, by-laws, funds and infrastructure of the proposed university.

Barely a fortnight ago the state government had announced the setting up of a Health University in the state with an aim to provide quality medical education in Odisha in view of a large number of institutions coming up in Odisha to provide medical education.

While there were three state-run medical colleges in Odisha, five more were coming up in the state. This apart, there were several private medical colleges, nursing colleges and dental colleges.
