Odisha is likely to get a new Director General of Police (DGP) soon with Governor Ganeshi Lal on Tuesday having approved the name of state DGP R P Sharma as a Lokayukta member on Tuesday.

The Lokyukta selection panel had recommended the name of Sharma as a member of the anti-corruption ombudsman organisation.

"The Governor on Tuesday gave his consent for the appointment of R P Sharma as a non-judicial member of the Lokayukta," a source in the Raj Bhavan said.

Reacting to the development, Sharma said, "There is a process and a notification will be issued in this regard. I will join only after a formal notification is issued.

"I will put my previous experience as the chief of the vigilance wing of Odisha Police to serve the Lokayukta."

Meanwhile, sources in the home department said that 59-year-old Sharma has applied for voluntary retirement scheme (VRS). He was the Director General of Police since August 30, 2017.

The Lokayukta become functional in the state from April 8 this year. It is headed by former Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court Ajit Singh.

The five-member constitutional body, has two other members -- Justice (retd) BK Nayak and former IFS officer Debabrata Swain.

As per the Lokayukta Act, the fifth member of the anti-corruption body will either be a woman or member from Scheduled Category or the minority community.

With Sharma likely to quit as the DGP following his formal appointment as member of the Lokayukta, speculations are rife over who will take charge of the top post in Odisha Police.
