Odisha government today said it would take up the matter relating to alleged nudity during a drama festival here with the authorities of National School of Drama (NSD).

The alleged scene was enacted by a troupe from NSD at Ravindra Mandap here last night, Odisha Tourism and Culture minister Ashok Panda said.

A Polish actress allegedly went nude during a rape scene of the play enacted by a Poland-based theatre group yesterday.

The play titled 'Sonka' was based on the torture of a girl by security personnel.

As soon as the drama was over, the audience in large numbers brought the matter to the notice of the culture minister and demanded action against the persons who encouraged nudity in public.

"The actress went nude to make the rape scene real. Though the scene was presented with shadow effects, the nudity was clearly visible," said a member of the audience.

Reacting over the incident, Panda said "The act could have been presented in a symbolic manner instead of resorting to nudity. I will take up the matter with the NSD authorities."

He said Odia culture does not allow nudity and there should be a "degree of restraint" in showcasing such work.

"One should perform within the limit. There are other non-explicit ways of portraying any subjects," Panda said.
