Officer held for accepting bribe

A woman development officer in the social welfare department in the Panchayat Union office here was today caught red-handed while allegedly accepting Rs 1,000 as bribe for giving an application for entailing marriage assistance under a goverment scheme.

Based on the complaint by one Nilafar Banu that the 58-year-old officer, Victoria, was demanding Rs 1,000 for an application for the assistance of Rs 50,000, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths laid a trap and asked her to hand over marked currency notes, police said.

As Victoria was accepting the marked Rs 500 notes, she was caught red-handed and and produced before a court, which remanded her in judicial custody, they said.
 

Victoria is due to retire this year.
