Central revenue officers can explain the benefits of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in every district of the country, an association representing them said today.

The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly asked BJP parliamentarians to spread awareness about GST among people.

The association of Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) officers said they can volunteer an officer with each MP, irrespective of the party, across the country to educate people about the benefits of the GST and changes in taxation system.

"We have asked our officers to hold seminars on GST with local chambers of commerce to generate awareness in this regard. The proposed tax regime will be successful and bring in desired result if people are aware about its benefits," president of the association Anup K Srivastava said.

He said the IRS officers, who have worked tirelessly for GST for many years and have provided training to state governments' Value Added Tax (VAT) officers, will be happy to be part of this awareness campaign.

"There are about 640 districts in the country and we have 3,000 officers as our members. They can easily go to all the districts and spread awareness," Srivastava told PTI.

The Goods and Services Tax is likely to be rolled out from July 1.
