A government official in Afghanistan says three bombs have exploded in rapid succession in southern Helmand province, injuring five people.

Omar Zawaq, spokesman for Helmand's governor, says the remote-controlled bombs exploded today near a bus station in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah. He said some of injured were seriously wounded.

The explosions occurred after sunset when few people travel because of the risk of attacks by insurgents and marauding criminal gangs. Zawaq said that limited the casualties.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though the Taliban launches regular attacks in Helmand province.

Afghanistan's 12-year war largely has been fought in the south and the east of the country, leaving the region deeply insecure for residents.
