"Tranquilisers were being used to capture the big cat. If necessary, authorities can decide to kill the tiger to prevent further loss to life", Chavan said while replying to a media query on the sidelines of a function here tonight.

The tiger has reportedly killed five persons, including four women, in the last three weeks, with a year-old girl becoming its fifth victim recently. The tiger's killing spree has created fear in villages adjoining Navegaon Bandh National Park.

The Forest Department has set six traps while police have deployed some armed personnel in the area.

Meanwhile, responding to a query, the Chief Minister said he would approach Karnataka government with a request to release water from Almatti dam for the border district of Solapur, which is facing acute shortage of water.
