Officials close 400-ft borewell after minor girl's death

The 400-ft deep borewell, in which a six-year-old girl fell and died after being rescued, was closed today by Tiruvannamalai district administration, officials said today.

General public and district administration officials used construction equipment to close the borewell at Pulavanpadi village in Tiruvannamalai district, they said.

Devi, who was rescued from the borewell yesterday after a nine-hour battle by fire and rescue personnel, died after she did not respond to medical treatment.

The victim, daughter of a farming couple, tried to sit on a jute bag yesterday morning which was covering the borewell, dug some few months back, sources said.
 

Shankar, the owner of the land, in which the borewell was dug, was arrested on the charge of causing death due to negligence, police said.
