Prosecutors in central Mexico say a mayor and two companions have been shot death, and they say the mayor likely had links to a criminal gang.

The chief prosecutor of Mexico State says Jilotzingo Mayor Juan Antonio Mayen was killed on a highway by an armed group travelling in a pickup truck.

Prosecutor Alejandro Gomez says two other people were killed and two others wounded in the attack on two cars carrying Mayen, other local officials and bodyguards.

Today's attack took place in a rural area of Mexico State, west of Mexico City.

An assistant prosecutor says there's evidence that Mayen was linked to local gang whose leader had also been killed recently.

At least 48 mayors have been killed since Mexico's drug war began in 2006.
