The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) admitted a petition of alleged negligence by authorities of the SCB Medical College and Hospital causing death of a middle-aged woman patient and issued notices to the hospital authorities and state government today.

Taking up an application filed by Human Rights activist Prabir Das, the Commission issued notices to the state health secretary and the hospital superintendent asking them to file detailed reports on the matter within three weeks.

A native of Dhenkanal, Aarati Jata (35) had died falling from the rooftop of the Nephrology department of the Cuttack hospital on July 5 after being a few days ago as she was suffering from kidney-related diseases.

Quoting family sources, the police said Aarati had allegedly slipped from a parapet-less rooftop, while she had gone to the toilet on the upstairs.

Seeking a compensation of Rs 10 lakh as damage to the bereaved family, Das, who was also an advocate of the Orissa High Court, had moved the State Human Rights Commission.
