Oman is planning to promote itself as a niche wedding destination for Indians, according to a senior Omani official here.

"The Indian wedding industry is now worth more than USD 25 billion a year and it's growing at an estimated 20 per cent year over year," said Lubaina Sheerazi, India Representative, Ministry of Tourism.

"We want to tap this market for wedding destinations," she said, adding that Muscat, the capital city of Oman, is very well developed and provides a perfect set up for weddings with several world class hotels situated in the city.

"Oman is a short-haul destination with very good connectivity across various cities in India. India also shares a very strong cultural connect with Oman and with regards to cuisine the Indian palate is well catered to," the Muscat Daily quoted Sheerazi as saying.

Since summer temperatures are high in Oman, the sultanate in the Gulf is being positioned as a destination to be visited from September to April.

"The country becomes a perfect destination to travel for Indians during the November and December holidays," she said.

The ministry has undertaken joint promotions with travel agents, participated in trade shows, organised exhibitions and fairs in India across various cities and has conducted trade and media familiarisation trips, the report said.
