Press Trust of India Srinagar
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today termed the lynching of a man by a mob which accused his family of consuming beef in Dadri village as shameful and asked how could the country claim to be "tolerant" and "secular" following such incident.

"How can India claim to be a tolerant, secular nation if a person can be killed for what they are believed to have eaten? #shame," Omar said in a Tweet.

Omar also said that the adulation on the international stage for the country would not matter if the nation could not get its basics right.

"What good is adulation on the international stage if we can't get our basics right at home?" he said.

The National Conference (NC) working president also said "the fact that the murdered man has a son serving in the Air Force is neither here nor there. Would the murder be acceptable if son jobless?".
