A 23-year-old police constable was seriously injured after he allegedly shot himself with his rifle while on duty at a treasury office in a nearby village, police today said.
Balamurali, attached to Pondicherry Armed Police wing, was admitted in a critical condition to the government general hospital here, police said.
Police said Balamurali, who was on security duty at the treasury office in Bahoor last night, was found writhing in pain on the premises of the office when another constable arrived at the office in the morning to relieve him. He allegedly shot himself in the chin.

Balamurali, who was profusely bleeding, was admitted to the Intensive care unit.
A case under IPC section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) has been registered, police said, adding, the cause of the constable's bid to commit suicide could not be known.
