Once a Leftist leader, Ranoj Pegu who had last year campaigned against Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is today seeking votes for himself as a BJP candidate for the Dhemaji assembly bypoll.

Pegu, a doctor by profession graduated from the Gauhati Medical College in 1987. He then dabbled in politics and in 1990 founded the United Reservation Movement Council of Assam (URMCA) that is considered to be affiliated to the CPI(ML).

Ranoj Pegu then floated the Ganashakti Party.

Quitting the president's post of Ganashakti, 55-year old Pegu, who was the Chief Executive Member of Mising Autonomous Council, last month joined the BJP which fielded him as its nominee for the Dhemaji bypolls slated for April 9.

The Dhemaji by-election was necessitated as the sitting BJP MLA Pradan Baruah vacated the seat after he won the bypoll to the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat which was vacated by Sarbananda Sonowal.
