"Sanjay alias Jaiveer alias Hari, resident of Trilokpuri, was arrested on the specific input that he would be coming near Gokhle market, Mori Gate at about 02.30 PM yesterday," said S B S Tyagi, DCP Crime and Railways.
He along with three others had allegedly robbed Rs 35 lakh from Rajendra Jain and his nephew Paras Jain when they were on their way to Tees Hazari metro station in May, police said.
According to police, when the Jains were crossing the road, a car stopped in front of them and two persons came out and tried to snatch the bags from their hands. When they resisted, two more persons came out of the car, whipped out revolvers and fired at them.
"Rajender fell on the spot with a bullet injury while Paras tried to overpower them but they managed to escape in the car. Both of them sustained bullet injuries and were admitted to hospital but Rajender succumbed to his injuries," they said, adding a cash reward of Rs 50,000 was announced on Sanjay.
During interrogation, he confessed that he was involved in the incident along with his associates Bijender alias Biddi of Uttam Nagar, Deen Bandhu and Rakesh Arora of Dwarka, Deepak and Dharam Nath alias Bihari. Arora had already been arrested.
Bihari used to work in Sadar Bazar or Chandni chowk area as labourer for past 15 years. He had provided the information to the gang members about Jains who used to carry huge amount of money on cycle rickshaw up to Tis Hazari Metro Station from Sadar Bazar.
The gang carried out the recce of the route for two months. Bihari and Jaiveer came into contact in the year 2003 in Tihar Jail, police said.
